The questions your asked when giving blood have always struck me as a bit homophobic, the section on african men borders on the racist :S I think the NHS needs a better screening system because currently they exclude to many people.

UtOpIa What the fuck? IS this some sort of AIDS policy "oh, only gay people get AIDS"? Whereas in fact there's been an alarming rise in AIDS cases in straight people over the last few years. I honestly never knew about this; it's quite disgusting. There's a lot of old values about that need changing. I believe the age of consent for gay sex is also still higher (18?) than for heterosexuals; what's going on here? Surely the NHS is crying out for blood so why have this sort of policy? If they're so desperate for blood why not just screen people they suspect of having AIDS. That arbitrary sort of attitude does nothing to 'remove the stigma' of AIDS; something the NHS has been bleating about for years!

I think this is a petition well worth backing and it also gives us a chance to work with LGBT support group here in the union. Please do bring that documentation to the next meeting...

They say.. You should never give blood if: 1 You carry the hepatitis B virus, the hepatitis C virus or the HIV virus. 2 You're a man who's had sex with another man, even "safe sex" using a condom. 3 You've ever worked as a prostitute. 4 You've ever injected yourself with drugs - even once. You should not give blood for 12 months after sex with: 1 A man who has had sex with another man (if you're a female). 2 A prostitute. 3 Anyone who has ever injected themselves with drugs. 4 Anyone with haemophilia or a related blood clotting disorder who has received clotting factor concentrates. 5 Anyone of any race who has been sexually active in parts of the world where AIDS/HIV is very common. This includes countries in Africa. Please do not give blood if you even think that you need a test for HIV or hepatitis, or if you had sex in the past year with someone you think may be HIV or hepatitis positive These are the questions they ask you when you go to donate: www.blood.co.uk/pages/c11xclud.html

Cool, thanks for the link . If they were so bothered, they'd screen anyone who was 'suspect'. I've not personally given blood due to an inherent dislike of needles, and the fact that I was on some very strong medication once, so I'm not sure entirely what it's like.

Pfft, discrimination at its finest. They might as well have written 'No gay people, thanks, we don't like you' on the front. Without a doubt this has my support. On a side note, anyone find out when the blood wagon is coming to Teesside? I want my blue card

kewl guys thanks for ya support on this one ..will have to find out when the blood bus is arriving at campus next and maybe we could organise a demonstration outside ..peaceful of course .. ..its time the system changed ..as it is far too discriminatory and rigid. If there is such a shortage ..there are over a million willing people out there who want to give blood but can't due to the NHS' archaic practices! They talk about the new face of health ..I think its the same old face ..but tarted up a little with rouge! Steven I will pass your number onto Karen in the LGBT and maybe if ya get a chance to see Dave Willis too ... Cheers uToPiA

Gah! Missed the ones at uni But I'm definately up for doing something when the vans come back to Middlesbrough later in November. Suppose there's no getting out of donating blood this time though is there?? Had a bit of an unfortunate experience last time I gave blood and have stayed well clear since!!! Let's just say that I cannot walk home alone afterwards because it's quite possible that I will end up passing out right in the middle of the road! Eeek! ;D xx
