operation christmas child is run by samaritans purse and it involves filling a shoebox with things for the children for christmas. it shouldnt cost too much, can get free shoeboxes from shoeshops and can order advertising components from the organisers.there needs to be £2 attached to each box but we can ask for donation for that. i think the organisers will pick the boxes up if over 50 but if we dont get that many, theres a drop off place on borough road i will find out more if anyone would want to do it but if not nevermind it was just an idea to find out more go to www.samaritanspurse.uk.com/occ/index.asp

Thats an excellent idea Carla. I happen to know some people who help run this campaign and it really does make a huge impact to these kids who see christmas as just another day to survive. I think we should all get involved and perhaps get some union staff involved as well.

Yup. I think the CU are doing it again this year so I'll find out. If they are we can send our boxes off with theirs to make it easier. x

yeah we did it at our school what normally works quite well is if you ask people to donate "things" of a suitable nature then and then put them in boxes as a group you tend to get more that way

aw yay! ;D i really enjoyed it when i did it at school so i thought it might be good to do it here, and it is a worthwhile cause and wont cost much to do
it will be great joining in with the CU, then we can get the boxes picked up
i work in the union too so could put a notice in the bar staff area where kitchen and bar staff will see it
shall i order some box tags etc then? how many to people reckon we will need ill also need numbers for shoeboxes so i can ask around shoeshops x
thats also a good idea about donating things, because there are a lot of criteria about what can be sent x

The CU and ASC are doing a shoebox thing again this year but not for Operation Xmas Child. It's for Rotary so here is the link www.rotary1280.org/shoebox/ It's up to you all what we do about it. They will give us the boxes and list of what we can put in them and it lasts all year, so what they don't get in time for Xmas can still be sent out to people who need them. The CU and ASC are holding a stall in the union soon (was supposed to be this week but got cancelled) so I'll let you all know when it will be. Just decide what you all want to do. I don't see any problems with sticking to Operation Xmas Child, we would just have to get the boxes sent off on our own. But either way, at least we will be making some ickle children happy! Let me know what you all want to do! xx

Have just spoken to Rachel (chair of CU) she says we have until the end of term to do the shoeboxes. I will hopefully be bringing some boxes along to the meeting this week so if you need one then you can collect one from me. Also, you don't have to fill a whole shoebox if you don't want to. You can just hand in a few items at the ASC and they will add them with others to make a box.Anything else I'll let you know about at the meeting on Thursday. See ya soon x

I've just spoken to Rachel (chair of CU) and she is going to leave some boxes in the ASC tonight for all those who are interested, so come along to the meeting and collect them. They are to go in the boxes they supply so I'll bring along the shoe boxes that I have been given so you can transfer them into the new boxes. I am hoping everyone will have time to at least collect one tonight as it will make a huge difference to someones life for a little time and effort on your part. See you all there tonight.
